In a series of appearances in Oklahoma this week, Justice Sonia Sotomayor talked about the impact of race in society and the BigLaw firms that dominate Supreme Court litigation.

At an appearance at the University of Tulsa on Wednesday, Sotomayor said she wouldn’t be where she is today without affirmative action, report the Associated Press and the Tulsa World.

“We all aspire to a color-blind society,” Sotomayor said. “There is a pull in each of us that wants race not to matter. But the reality is that as much as we wish it away, it makes a difference in society. Society is affected by it at every level.”

In an appearance at Oklahoma City University’s law school on Thursday, Sotomayor expressed disappointment that BigLaw lawyers dominate the cases before her court, Fox25 reports. She also told students they will never be unhappy with a legal career if they remember that the legal profession is about service to people.
