A reception for lawmakers hosted by the New York State Trial Lawyers Association may have violated a state ethics law, according to a state commission.

The bar group may have violated the law because of a December 2008 reception it hosted for lawmakers in Albany, according to the New York State Commission on Public Integrity. The New York Law Journal has the story.

Ethics reforms limit gifts to lawmakers to items of nominal value.

A spokesman for the trial lawyers group, Alex Navarro-McKay, told the New York Law Journal that a fine of $250 for the violation is being discussed.

Can you expect anything less from a trial lawyer?

Should we expect more from a commenter that shares a name with a part of the male anatomy?

Next week’s “Question of the Week” should take a poll on whether a reception hosted by lawyers exceeds “nominal value.”
