Report: Voicemail recording of woman being strangled will be in evidence at law grad's murder trial
When law graduate Jason Bohn was arrested a year ago concerning the “especially cruel” slaying of his ex-girlfriend, the Queen’s district attorney cited, among other evidence, a call a police sergeant says the suspect made to her cellphone while she was in the station to report his conduct..
The sergeant listened, after Danielle Thomas turned on a loudspeaker on the device, as Bohn threatened to “hunt her down like a dog” and “bash in her skull,” DA Richard A. Brown recounted in a statement (PDF) circulated to the media last year.
Now CBS New York is reporting that this isn’t the only cellphone evidence that could be used against Bohn at his upcoming first-degree murder trial.
An accidental call from Bohn’s cellphone wound up recording on a friend’s voicemail what happened as Thomas was being strangled, the station says, reporting that it has obtained a transcript of the call.
Prosecutors said Bohn repeatedly strangled Thomas as he questioned her about a phone call she had made. She responded by denying making the call and telling him she loves him amid gasps for air, the station reports. At one point, the transcript shows, he told her: “You have five seconds and then … and then I’m going to kill you.”
The article doesn’t include any current comment from Bohn’s defense counsel, but notes that in an earlier interview, attorney Todd Greenberg said Bohn’s abuse-laden childhood caused him extreme emotional distress and that “Mr. Bohn’s mental capacity will become an issue in this case.” If proven at trial, that could help reduce a potential sentence, if Bohn is convicted, from life to 25 years in prison.
