After reportedly clinging to the windshield of her husband’s car as he hit speeds of up to 100 mph during a 40-mile wild ride, a California woman was treated for hypothermia.

But Rebecca Carroll, 25, was not severely hurt, complaining only of back pain and facial abrasions, reports the Manteca Bulletin. Her husband, Christopher Michael Carroll, 36, is being held without bail at the San Joaquin County Jail after being charged with attempted murder, kidnapping and corporal injury.

Passing motorists called police after they spotted her clinging to the windshield of his minivan and followed the vehicle as it traveled between Manteca and Pleasanton on Interstate 5 and other major highways, authorities say. When the vehicle finally slowed down, she rolled off. Police say she later complained of back pain.

Although the temperature was around 45 degrees at the time, the wind chill created by driving at 100 mph made the trip feel substantially colder to Carroll as she clung to the windshield wipers, according to the article.

“Now I know it was one of the stupidest things in my life, but I jumped on the van. He backed out quickly. It turned me and I got stuck. When we were on the freeway, I had no choice but to hold on,” she tells News 10, a local ABC affiliate.

“I was so cold, I couldn’t feel my hands anymore. I didn’t know if I was even holding on. … I can’t believe I’m still alive.”
