Onetime Natalee Holloway suspect may wed from Peruvian jail to avoid extortion extradition
Corrected: Convicted murderer Joran van der Sloot is now jailed in Peru, where he was found guilty of slaying college student Stephany Flores.
His crime there was high-profile because of extensive publicity over the still-unsolved disappearance of another young woman, U.S. citizen Natalee Holloway, who vanished in Aruba while on a high-school graduation trip there in 2005.
Van der Sloot, who was at one point a suspect in the Holloway case, met with Holloway’s mother while jailed in Peru. He is now accused in a federal case in Alabama of accepting $25,000 while attempting to extort $250,000 from Holloway’s mother, in return for providing details about her daughter’s death and the location where it occurred, the Daily Beast reports.
As the Associated Press is also reporting, based on information from van der Sloot’s lawyer, the 26-year-old Dutchman is planning a prison wedding in June.
If it takes place, that could help him avoid extradition to Alabama in the fraud and extortion case he faces there, the Daily Beast explains, because getting married will help him qualify for Peruvian citizenship.
