Police in El Cerrito, California, have announced a $50,000 reward for information about the shooting death of James Gilliland, an intellectual property partner at Kilpatrick Townsend & Stockton.

The reward is being offered by an anonymous, private donor for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person who is responsible for Gilliland’s death, according to a press release. The San Francisco Chronicle and the Recorder (sub. req.) have stories.

Police have not established a motive for the crime and have no information on a possible suspect. The killer did not take Gilliland’s wallet or cellphone. The department is reviewing private surveillance video, but it’s unknown if it will be of value, according to the press release.

Gilliland was killed outside his home on Oct. 27 by a person waiting for him on his front porch, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

Gilliland, 62, was the chair of Townsend & Townsend & Crew from 2001 to 2010, before it merged and became Kilpatrick Townsend.

Kilpatrick Townsend managing partner Susan Spaeth released this statement: “We strongly encourage anyone with information that might assist the investigation into the tragic death of our colleague and dear friend to immediately come forward and contact the El Cerrito Police Department. Jim Gilliland was such a positive force of nature. While he kept his loving family at the center of his life, he also volunteered his time to those in need, including his lifelong work to develop wider educational opportunities for disadvantaged youth in the East Bay. The larger community, not just the legal community, is a much lesser place without Jim. Whoever is responsible for this heinous crime needs to be brought to justice.”
