The father of Rielle Hunter, John Edwards’ mistress, was an Ocala, Fla., lawyer implicated in a scam to kill horses for insurance money.

The first horse killed belonged to Hunter, who was then a teenager known as Lisa Jo Druck, the Ocala Star Banner reports. Her father, James Druck, represented insurance companies. But one of his associates, Tommy “The Sandman” Burns, told Sports Illustrated that it was Druck who showed him how to electrocute horses for their owners to collect the insurance.

Burns said he electrocuted the show horse that Lisa rode so James Druck could collect $150,000 in insurance. Burns was arrested in 1991 and convicted of animal cruelty and insurance fraud. James Druck died from cancer in 1992.
