Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. compared lawyers to firefighters in a speech yesterday, concluding that both are viewed as “a little bit nuts.”

He told students at the University of Montana law school that both groups jump into difficult situations and have a strong camaraderie, the Associated Press reports.

“It might seem that smokejumpers and litigators have nothing in common,” Roberts said, according to a report in the Missoulian.com. “But both are willing to jump into an environment that others try to avoid.”

Roberts warned that students should not pursue law simply for a big paycheck. “If you are in the law simply to make a living, you are not likely to find it rewarding,” he said.

The speech was Roberts’ first since he suffered a seizure in July. He appeared fit and energetic.
