Rove Comments Led to Firing, Lawyer Says
A Texas lawyer contends in a lawsuit that she was fired from the state secretary of state’s office in violation of her First Amendment rights for comments she made in an article about Karl Rove.
Elizabeth Reyes claims she was fired in 2005 because her remarks to a Washington Post reporter embarrassed her bosses, Texas Lawyer reports. Her bosses contend she violated an office policy on press calls.
Reyes says she didn’t realize she was talking to a journalist and didn’t know she was answering questions about Karl Rove when questioned about whether a person who owns two rental cottages in a county is qualified to vote there.
Reyes told the reporter that a county prosecutor can pursue a vote fraud prosecution against someone who registers to vote in a place where he doesn’t live, Texas Lawyer reports in an earlier article.
