Updated: The son of New York’s former mayor, Rudy Giuliani, has sued Duke University over being kicked off of the golf team.

Andrew Giuliani, a 22-year-old incoming senior, had hopes of turning pro. But a 198-page lawsuit filed in federal court by Durham, N.C., attorney Robert Ekstrand contends that his dismissal from the team without cause will put an end to that dream, reports the Associated Press.

His average last year put him 12th on the team’s 14-man roster, according to the news agency.

“In the lawsuit, he acknowledges that he may have misbehaved in February by flipping his putter a few feet, throwing and breaking a club, gunning his engine out of a parking lot and tossing an apple at a teammate’s face in a skirmish,” reports the New York Times’ City Room blog.

However, Andrew Giuliani says he apologized for these incidents and contends that the school’s treatment of him, under a new coach who took over last summer, was “bizarre.”

The lawsuit (PDF), a copy of which is provided by the New York Times, contends that promises made to Giuliani by the university when he was recruited as a high school student weren’t fulfilled.

Duke says it intends to defend the lawsuit vigorously.
