A student who committed suicide after his roommate photographed him having sex in his dorm room and posted the footage on the Internet had complained to Rutgers University authorities shortly before he leapt to his death off the George Washington Bridge last month.

Now Middlesex County prosecutors have obtained a subpoena for the university’s e-mails concerning Tyler Clementi’s complaint, reports the Star-Ledger.

A spokesman for the university says it is cooperating, but notes that a subpoena may be required before it provides private information protected by federal education law.

Two fellow members of the freshman class have been criminally charged with invasion of privacy and authorities have said they are investigating to determine whether the pair might be charged with hate crimes as well.
