A story about a Michigan lawyer who sought the public’s help several months ago to try to find her missing husband didn’t have a happy ending.

The body of David Widlak, 62, was found by duck hunters in October. And Macomb County authorities are now saying they believe his death was a suicide, although this isn’t a certainty, reports the Detroit Free Press.

Among the reasons they cite for this conclusion are that the Community Central Bank Corp.chief executive officer’s computer, iPad and vehicle navigation system were wiped before his death and a trail of cell phone pings leading to a marshy area near Lake St. Clair, where his body was found.

However, his family, including his widow, attorney Anne Widlak, don’t accept that conclusion, says Todd Flood, a lawyer who is representing them. And experts have reached differing conclusions about whether he shot himself or was killed, execution-style, by someone else, reports the Detroit News.

Nothing in his life suggested that David Widlak was thinking about killing himself, his family contends, and he had a longstanding phobia of water, which makes it unlikely he would kill himself at a lake.

“Is it probable the someone would shoot themselves in the back of the head?” asks Flood. “Is it probable that someone would go to a place where he has a phobia?”
