Scalia Backs Work-Life Balance, Suggests Law Firms Based in Cleveland or 'La La Land'
Justice Antonin Scalia gave some advice to law students at the University of Chicago on Monday involving work-life balance and the geographic means to achieve it.
Scalia said job-hunting students should try to find a practice where they won’t have to work too many hours, the Chicago Sun-Times reports. “Try to find a practice that enables you to maintain a human existence,” he said, “time for your family, your church or synagogue, community…Boy Scouts, Little League.”
Scalia noted that he started out at Jones Day in Cleveland. “You should look for a place like that. I’m sure they’re still out there. Maybe you have to go to Cleveland,” he said.
Another option, he said, may be a California-based law firm. “My son Gene went to Gibson Dunn,” he said. “Any big firm has the basic ethos of its head office and if the head office is in La La land, it’s gonna be a little laid back.”
Scalia taught at the law school from 1977 to 1982. The Chicago Tribune and the Associated Press also have stories on the speech.
