SCOTUS favorability rating drops below 50% for the first time in almost 30 years
For the first time in nearly 30 years, the U.S. Supreme Court’s favorability rating as fallen to 48 percent, and 38 percent of adults have an unfavorable opinion of the highest-ranking U.S. Court.
The statistics are the result of a survey done in July of 1,480 adults living in the U.S. by the Pew Research Center.
The court elicited a more favorable opinion this spring, at 52 percent, before its end-of-term decisions on same-sex marriage and the Voting Rights Act, according to the report. The drop is particularly prominent among black survey participants from 61 percent viewing the court favorably in March to 44 percent today. Partisan differences have narrowed, as more Democrats responding to the survey have lowered their opinions of the court in the past year and Republican respondents have boosted theirs, according to the analysis. Currently, 54 percent of Democrats and 48 percent of Republicans have a favorable opinion of the court.
