SCOTUSblog, a popular blog for Supreme Court watchers, has decided to ban reader comments on most of its posts because of “silly sniping.”

A notice posted on the blog today says the editors tried unsuccessfully to reduce unproductive comments in 2006 by requiring commenters to post their full names.

“We did that to prevent what we saw as unproductive sniping by a tiny minority of our readers that took away from the overall quality of the blog,” the post says. “After a year and a half of that policy, that sort of silly sniping has not abated despite the change.”
