A Seattle defense lawyer who has been retained to represent an Army staff sergeant suspected of killing 16 civilians in Afghanistan says he has now met with his client, who is being held in a military prison at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.

His meeting with Robert Bales, 38, was emotional, says attorney John Henry Browne. The defense team released a statement over the weekend saying that “it is too early to determine what factors may have played into this incident and the defense team looks forward to reviewing the evidence, examining all of Sergeant Bales’ medical and personnel records, and interviewing witnesses,” the Associated Press reports.
