In a classic children’s book, Make Way for Ducklings, Boston police officers serve as the protectors of a mother mallard duck as she leads her offspring through busy city streets to a new home in the Boston Public Garden.
But in the real-life case of a mallard mother in the nation’s capital it is a local law firm which has gone the extra mile to help the new mom and at least 10 ducklings settle into a new home in Rock Creek Park.
After she built a nest in a planter on a terrace outside a ninth-floor Crowell & Moring conference room in Washington, D.C., the law firm turned the area into what appeared to be a duck’s dream home.
A video published by the Washington Post shows the babies and their mom, as well as their set-up on the terrace. It included a specially constructed wooden ramp that led from the planter to a platform that provided a convenient entry to a plastic kiddie swimming pool filled with water. From there, the ramp switched direction and continued downward to the terrace floor.
The law firm also provided food for the duck family.
However, due to concerns that the ducklings could fall from the terrace, or might be targeted by a hawk that has been seen in the vicinity, the firm arranged for them to be transported Wednesday to the park, a spokeswoman told the ABA Journal.
“They brought a lot of joy and delight while they were here,” she said.
