U.S. Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nev., has sued the makers and distributors of an exercise band that he blames for a January accident that caused him to lose eyesight in his right eye.

Reid, 75, claims in the Oct. 6 lawsuit that the TheraBand was unreasonably dangerous for use by the elderly and those with muscle damage who can’t effectively grip the bands, report Courthouse News Service, the Las Vegas Review-Journal and the Associated Press.

The lawsuit says Reid had mounted his TheraBand to a sturdy object in his bathroom. When he was exercising on New York’s Day, the TheraBand “broke or slipped out of Mr. Reid’s hand, causing him to spin around and strike his face on a cabinet.” The accident caused a loss of vision to Reid’s right eye, a concussion, broken orbital bones, facial disfigurement and broken ribs, the complaint says.

The suit claims negligence, strict liability and failure to warn.
