With her Senate confirmation on Monday, Jacqueline Nguyen becomes the first Asian American woman to be seated on a federal appeals court.

Nguyen, a federal trial judge, will be elevated to the San Francisco-based 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, report the Los Angeles Times and the San Francisco Chronicle.

Nguyen was a child when she and her family fled Vietnam in 1975, the stories say. In California, she worked in the family’s doughnut shop before going to college. She has practiced law at Musick, Peeler & Garrett; prosecuted federal cases; and worked as a judge at the state and federal level.
