Michael Viccora spent his last day as a labor and employment partner at Seyfarth Shaw on Sept. 30 so he could pursue a career dream that won’t be nearly as high-paying.

Viccora, 51, wants to become a high school social studies teacher, the Am Law Daily reports. He always dreamed of teaching, but he didn’t take steps toward that end until his father died in 2009 and his mother died the next year.

“Those events underscored that if I wanted to make a move to do some of these other things in life, I had to get up and do them,” he told the Am Law Daily. “It prompted me to be more active in my goal to make the move.”

Viccora and his wife, Elaine, began to increase their savings to make the career change possible. He took a night course at George Mason University in the summer, and is now taking courses at the school for his teacher’s certification and a master’s degree.

Viccora says his wife has been “incredibly supportive” since he first broached the idea five years ago. His two children, both college students, are also on board. “It has been a family decision,” he tells the Am Law Daily.
