Sheppard Mullin Richter & Hampton announced Monday that it has opened an office in Chicago with a five-lawyer team from K&L Gates.

The new office of the California-based international firm also includes a labor and employment partner from Winston & Strawn on its attorney roster, as well as Sheppard Mullin’s general counsel, D. Ronald Ryland, who is relocating to Chicago from San Francisco. Serving as managing partner in Chicago will be Lawrence C. Eppley, a former K&L Gates partner who focuses his practice on real estate and finance matters.

The other members of Eppley’s team, are all former K&L Gates partners with expertise in finance, mergers and acquisitions, real estate, securities and tax law.

“Establishing a Chicago presence is a strategic step in growing and strengthening the firm’s national footprint, beyond the East and West coasts,” says Sheppard Mullin’s chairman, Guy N. Halgren, in the release.

Although the new office will initially focus on serving existing and new clients with corporate, employment, real estate and finance matters, further growth is planned, Halgren said. “Chicago is the Midwest’s corporate center and we are committed to growing the office to serve companies in the region, including those in the advertising, healthcare, insurance, private equity and technology sectors.”

The approximately 600-attorney firm also has 14 other offices in California, New York, Washington, D.C., and several foreign locations including London. .
