Congressional investigators reportedly are probing whether a ninth U.S. attorney should be included among the current list of eight top prosecutors who allegedly may have been fired as part of a political purge.

Lawmakers are concerned that Todd Graves, a U.S. Attorney in Kansas City, Mo., may have been forced out because he refused to put his weight behind a federal lawsuit directed at alleged Democratic voter fraud in the state, reports AP. In an effort to find out more about what happened, Graves’ initial replacement, Bradley Schlozman, who now works at the Justice Department, was asked today to appear as a witness before the Senate Judiciary Committee.

“We believe the Committee would benefit from hearing directly from you in order to gain a better understanding of the role voter fraud may have played in the administration’s decisions to retain or remove certain U.S. Attorneys,” wrote chairman Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., in a letter co-signed by Arlen Specter, R-Pa., the committee’s ranking Republican.

An earlier ABAJournal.com post discusses Schlozman’s background.
