An advisory panel created to look into the Virginia Tech massacre will be counseled on a pro bono basis by Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom, officials announced today.

Although the state attorney general’s office has been providing advice to the panel, the Richmond Times-Dispatch reports, officials decided to accept the New York City-based megafirm’s offer of free representation because the AG’s office was also counseling the college and state police, according to W. Gerald Massengill. A retired state police superintendent, he chairs the review panel, which was created in the wake of the April 16 on-campus massacre of more than 30 students and faculty by a deranged student.

Other members include former Pennsylvania Governor Tom Ridge; Diane M. Strickland, a former state judge who now works for an arbitration and mediation firm; Gordon Davies; Marcus L. Martin; Aradhana A. Bela Sood; Roger L. Depue and Carroll Ann Ellis. The Virginia Tech Review Panel’s Web site provides additional information about the panel members.
