A Kansas lawyer was the victim of a robbery when she was shot to death in the carport of her home as she and her friend returned from celebrating the attorney’s birthday one evening last summer, according to testimony Tuesday in the Shawnee County District Court case.

And those charged in the July 21 attack on Natalie Gibson, 40, and Lori Allison, 42, who was shot in the arm in the same incident, may have been involved in a series of home invasions in the Topeka area, the Capital-Journal reports.

Allison said Gibson was shot to death in front of her as robbers demanded money after the two women parked their SUV in the carport and started removing gifts from the vehicle.

A neighbor testified that his Akita had been shot to death outside his home at about 4 a.m. less than a month earlier, and that he subsequently heard a car driving away from the area as the dead or dying dog lay on the floor of his home after running inside.

Another Capital-Journal article provides additional details about evidence in the felony murder case. A total of nine defendants face first-degree murder charges; three are reportedly cooperating witnesses.
