An Arizona-based law firm has opened its first foreign office in Mexico, becoming the first major United States firm to do so in the Baja California Sur state.

Snell & Wilmer’s new office in San Jose del Cabo will focus on helping U.S. companies do business in Mexico, and and vice-versa, reports the Arizona Republic.

Counsel Carlos Sugich, a U.S.-educated Mexican attorney who presently practices in the firm’s Phoenix office, will split his time between Phoenix and the new office in Mexico. Most U.S. firms that have Mexican offices locate them either in Mexico City or Monterrey, he notes.

“We consider doing this a natural expansion within our region, which covers the Southwest and Rocky Mountain states,” says partner and executive committee member Curt Reimann, who will also support the new Mexican office. “Our focus will be Baja California and northern Mexico.”

The firm has more than 400 attorneys in offices in Arizona, Denver, Las Vegas, Salt Lake City and Orange County, Calif.
