Opening statements were made Thursday in a felony firearms case against the sole attorney running for election next week against an incumbent Nevada prosecutor.

Defendant Raymond James “Jim” Duensing, who was shot multiple times by a Las Vegas police officer during a 2009 traffic stop, is charged with resisting a police officer, carrying a concealed weapon, and unlawful possession of a firearm, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reports.

Police said Duensing was pulled over because he was in a right-turn lane but drove straight across an intersection.

Previously unsuccessful in his attempts to win a seat in Congress, Duensing is again on the ballot as a Libertarian candidate—this time for the top Clark County prosecutor’s job. Steve Wolfson is the incumbent district attorney.

The trial is expected to continue beyond election day next week, the newspaper notes. If convicted, Duensing could get as much as 12 years in prison.
