Some of New York's top law schools see drops in applications
Even the nation’s fourth-ranked law school is seeing a drop in applications.
Columbia Law School has seen applications drop 27 percent since 2008 and 12 percent since last year, the Careerist reports, summarizing this story (sub. req.) in the New York Law Journal. Columbia tied for fourth place in the U.S. News rankings and was named the best law school for career prospects by the Princeton Review.
Law dean David Schizer told the New York Law Journal that, despite the drop in applications, the school is “incredibly spoiled” by the caliber of applicants. “There are many, many more people who would do well here than we can admit,” he said.
Columbia is among 14 law schools dealing with fewer applications. At New York University, ranked No. 6 by U.S. News, applications were down 19 percent since 2008 and 10 percent since last year.
New York law schools with the highest drop in applications since 2008 were Buffalo (down 50 percent), Touro (down 49 percent), and Albany (down 48 percent). At Cornell, however, applications were up 4 percent since 2008.
