When Sonia Sotomayor was nominated this week for the U.S. Supreme Court, she said she owed a debt of gratitude to her mother.

Sotomayor was referring to her mother’s sacrifices and hard work, made to ensure she got a good education and upbringing. But she has another reason to thank Mom, Politico reports.

On Nov. 23, Sotomayor won $8,283 in a jackpot game, according to new financial disclosure forms released by the federal court system. An anonymous White House aide told Politico that Sotomayor won the money gambling with her mother at a casino in Florida.

Sotomayor reported less than $65,000 in investments on the new form, a similar amount reported on a 2007 form. She makes about $180,000 a year as a federal appeals judge. The Chicago Tribune also reported the news.

The disclosure form does not include the value of Sotomayor’s home. Politico says it’s worth about $1.4 million, and she has two outstanding mortgages totaling $450,000.

Harvard University economics professor Greg Mankiw has noted the low investment holdings and suggested that Sotomayor is a spender rather than a saver. “My grandmother would have been shocked and appalled to see someone who makes so much save so little,” he wrote at his Greg Mankiw’s Blog.
