Sotomayor to Be Sworn in Saturday—At High Court Rather than White House
Judge Sonia Sotomayor will be sworn in Saturday by Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr., but the event won’t take place at the White House.
In a break from recent custom, Sotomayor will be sworn in at the U.S. Supreme Court, the National Law Journal reports. The location was moved apparently because of concerns that a White House event sends a message that justices are beholden to their appointing president, according to the story. John Paul Stevens and other justices have raised the issue.
A larger investiture event at the court is scheduled for Sept. 8. The next day, Sotomayor will hear her first oral argument at the high court.
Sotomayor, who will be the Supreme Court’s first Hispanic justice, was confirmed yesterday by a 68-31 vote.
