A professor emeritus who taught at Stanford Law School since 1969 has died from injuries he suffered in a July 14 bike accident.
John Barton wrote the undergraduate textbook International Arms Control, considered the standard, the Mercury News reports. He died at the age of 72 from brain injuries suffered in the accident.
Barton focused on international law issues with a science focus, studying defense, intellectual property and health care, according a Stanford profile.
Stanford law professor Hank Greely told the Stanford Report that Barton “was always driven not just to understand, but to make the world a better place—safer from nuclear war, safer from the ravages of disease."

Very sad. Unfortunately, it looks like ‘environmentalism’ has taken another victim. Driving SUVs saves lives.

What an ill-fitting and foolish comment. The professor was reportedly an avid runner and cyclist, pursuing personal fitness in a way that cannot be equally served by driving SUVs.

I should add that many people bike to work to save on transportation costs, including parking costs (especially in my city). My spouse has saved tens of thousands of dollars over the years by biking to work. It really saddens me to read stories like this. It makes me angry, however, to hear that this was a possible hit-and-run. May he rest in peace.

It’s unfortunate that someone would make such a ridiculous comment as JD. I won’t bother commenting further—such an off color and inappropriate comment doesn’t deserve further attention. John was an incredible man, and B McLeod has it right… he was an avid runner and cyclist and the world has experienced a true loss with his passing. We should all aspire to live our lives and make an impact in the world as he did.
