One of the top trial law firms in Colorado laid off 17 workers last year in order to avoid sharing with them a $391 million verdict they helped win a few months earlier, a lawsuit contends.

Filed by husband-and-wife attorneys Wendy and Eric Fisher in Denver District Court, suit alleges that Reilly Pozner had promised the two Fishers a “life-changing” benefit from their hard work on a big case.

The case, still being appealed, alleged that banks had allowed a company that sold prepaid funerals to raid trust accounts intended to cover the cost of future funeral services, the Denver Post reports.

The two Fishers are not equity partners but had worked for Reilly Pozner since 2000.

Attorney Christina Habas is representing the firm, which currently lists nine lawyers on its online attorney roster. She declined to comment specifically on the couple’s allegations, but said: “There are equity partners who take risks, who put their money on the line to fund litigation, and those who are not, and they have salaries and bonuses.”

The firm is seeking to require the Fishers to arbitrate the case.
