Members of four judges’ associations will file suit today in an effort to force New York lawmakers to give the judiciary a raise.

The suit will seek pay hikes retroactive to 2000 and annual cost-of-living raises in the future, the New York Law Journal reports. The complaint was mainly drafted by Chadbourne & Parke on a pro bono basis.

When the legislature last met in June, leaders promised to return soon to consider judicial pay raises. One bill would have given judges a pay hike of about 24 percent. But that has not happened as an investigation got under way into efforts by the aides of Gov. Eliot Spitzer to discredit the Senate majority leader.

Staten Island Civil Court Judge Philip Straniere told the legal publication that judges are tired of waiting. “Enough is enough,” he said.

Another pending suit filed by three New York judges also seeks to compel pay raises.
