Superman Comic Book Stolen from Nicolas Cage in 2000 is Found, Now Worth Up to $1.5M
Authorities are still investigating to see if they can determine who stole an original 1938 Superman comic featuring the debut of the Man of Steel from the home of actor Nicolas Cage in 2000.
But the good news, for now, is that the comic has been found and is expected to be returned to Cage if he antes up the money paid to him by his insurer following its loss, reports the Los Angeles Times. Alternatively, the comic, which is presently being held in a Los Angeles Police Department evidence safe, could be auctioned off by the carrier to recoup its payout.
Cage tells the newspaper he is thrilled by news that the Action Comic has been recovered in a San Fernando Valley storage locker, after an unidentified individual reportedly purchased the abandoned contents at auction. It’s now worth as much as $1.5 million, experts estimate, up considerably both from its $1 million value a decade ago and its original 10-cent cover price.
Still missing in the burglary is a 1939 comic book in which Batman makes his first appearance.
It appears from the Times article that the Superman comic was identified as having been stolen from Cage when the expert dealer who sold it to the actor was called in to authenticate the storage-locker find, recognized the comic as the actor’s and alerted authorities.
