The U.S. Supreme Court has refused an appeal seeking to overturn federal disclosure requirements for groups that spend money independently of political candidates.

The case is “a sequel to last January’s Citizens United decision” that found corporations have a First Amendment right to expressly support political candidates, SCOTUSblog reports.

The conservative group SpeechNow.org had challenged rules requiring it to operate as a political action committee that must disclose activities and funding sources, SCOTUSblog says. The rules apply to groups operating independently of candidates that spend money to influence federal elections.

The cert denial leaves in place a federal appeals court ruling that upheld disclosure requirements, but struck down contribution limits, the Associated Press reports. Bloomberg also has a story.
