Teen charged in Slender Man case ordered to spend 25 years in mental commitment
A Wisconsin teenager who said she had participated in the stabbing of a friend to please the fictional Slender Man character has been ordered to spend 25 years in mental commitment.
The commitment period is the maximum allowable, report the Associated Press, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and Newsweek.
The girl had pleaded guilty to attempted second-degree intentional homicide for the May 2014 stabbing that was carried out when she was 12 years old. She was prosecuted as an adult. She asserted an insanity defense in a penalty phase of the trial and was found not criminally responsible, according to the Journal Sentinel.
The teen’s co-defendant was also 12 at the time of the stabbing. She pleaded guilty to attempted first-degree intentional homicide in a deal in which prosecutors agreed she wasn’t criminally responsible. She was committed to a state mental hospital in a civil proceeding. Her sentencing hearing in the criminal case is scheduled for Feb. 1.
