A solo in Texas recently worried aloud about losing his full-time secretary because of her illness. Not only did the secretary help run his office, she also helped manage the walk-in clients who patronize his firm. The anecdote is a worthy reminder that not all clients are found because of marketing on websites, blogs and flashy TV commercials.

It also made us wonder what kind of business you’ve gotten from a walk-in client or chance encounter. So tell us, dear readers, what’s the biggest or most unusual matter you’ve handled as a result of a client who came to you out of the blue?

Posted by Amie Simpson: ” As a legal aid family law attorney, these are a few of the things I tell clients (depending on the client):

  1. You lie to me, and I will file a motion to withdraw.

  2. I do not have the resources to do “vengeance.” I will get you everything to which the law entitles you, but I will not spend time making the other party’s life miserable at your direction.

  3. I am, indeed, a “real” attorney, despite the fact that you are not paying me. If you have any doubts about my qualifications, you can and should go pay a retainer to someone you feel is more “real.”

  4. No live birds in the office (had to add this one within the last year… sigh.)”
