A once-prominent Texas lawyer has been convicted of conspiring to launder up to $600 million for a Mexican drug cartel and faces a federal prison sentence of as much as 20 years.

Marco Antonio Delgado testified Thursday that federal agents lied and took the facts of the El Paso case out of context, and the defense contended he thought he was involved in a legitimate business deal. But the jury apparently agreed with a prosecution argument that he had to know who was behind an alleged scheme of this financial magnitude, according to the Associated Press.

Email and recorded phone calls bolstered the government’s case.
