An increasing number of communities are cracking down on pedestrians who are distracted by text messages.

A Wilmington News Journal article published in USA Today has some examples:

• Police in Fort Lee, N.J., issue $85 fines for careless walking.

• The Utah Transit Authority punishes distracted walkers near their trains with a $50 fine.

Several Delaware towns are trying a different approach. Stickers placed on sidewalks near crosswalks tell pedestrians, “Look Up. Drivers aren’t always looking out for you. Walk smart. Arrive alive.”
