The percentage of women in the federal judiciary is the same as there are men with the names David, James, John, Joseph, Michael, Paul, Richard, Robert, Thomas and William.

Both groups make up 27 percent, the New York Times reports in an Upshot article titled, “The Top Jobs Where Women Are Outnumbered by Men Named John.”

The newspaper also reports lower percentages of Republican senators (12 percent) and Democratic governors (13 percent) who are women than men named John (14 percent and 19 percent, respectively).

At one point, there were as many justices on the Supreme Court named John as there were women on the court, the Times reported in a 2015 article. That changed when Justice Elena Kagan replaced Justice John Paul Stevens, who retired in 2010.

Now, the Times points out, there are fewer women on the Supreme Court than there are men named Anthony, Clarence, John and Neil.
