These Six Lawyers Aren’t on the Supreme Court Short List
The rumored U.S. Supreme Court short list continues to change as news stories and blogs report who’s in and who’s out.
According to a roundup of the stories by SCOTUSblog, there are six lawyers who aren’t on the short list. One is Hillary Clinton. Press secretary Robert Gibbs has said President Obama plans to keep her as secretary of state.
Others who aren’t on the list are:
• Harvard Law School professor Elizabeth Warren, the congressional overseer for the Troubled Asset Relief Program. CNN had reported she was on the list, but the Los Angeles Times says she isn’t.
• Gov. Deval Patrick of Massachusetts, who said while campaigning that he’s not interested, the Los Angeles Times reports.
• Interior Secretary Ken Salazar. The Los Angeles Times said he’s not on the list, but it didn’t elaborate.
• Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn. The Minneapolis Star-Tribune, the Huffington Post and the Hill say she’s not interested.
• Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse, D-R.I., who gave the Hill a statement saying he wants to continue to serve in the Senate.
According to the Wall Street Journal, the short list includes these names: Solicitor General Elena Kagan, Judge Merrick Garland, Judge Diane Wood, Judge Sidney Thomas, Harvard Law School dean Martha Minow, former Georgia Chief Justice Leah Ward Sears, Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm, and Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano. The Los Angeles Times says California Supreme Court Justice Carlos Moreno is also under consideration.
