The $1.5 million advance that Justice Clarence Thomas is receiving for his new book outpaces the amount received by other justices for writing ventures.

The late Justice William H. Rehnquist got a $48,412 advance for his last book in 2004, McClatchy Newspapers reports. And former Justice Sandra O’Connor received $12,500 in royalties that same year for her book.

The book, My Grandfather’s Son: A Memoir, has not been released to reviewers yet. It covers the first 43 years of Thomas’ life, including his difficult confirmation hearing in which Anita Hill claimed that he sexually harassed her.

HarperCollins spokeswoman Tina Andreadis told McClatchy the publisher anticipates the book will be a big success. “He wrote it himself,” she said. “There is no ghostwriter, no ‘as-told-to.’ “

Thomas will appear on 60 Minutes on Sept. 30 to publicize the book, ABAJournal.com noted in a prior post.
