Updated: A well-known Pennsylvania law firm is laying off seven lawyers and two staff members, at the same time that it is continuing to look for new attorneys to hire.

Thorp Reed & Armstrong, the seventh-largest law firm in Pittsburgh, said today that Friday’s layoffs were a strategic necessity, reports the Pittsburgh Business Times. The firm has about 90 lawyers in its Pittsburgh headquarters.

“We made a strategic decision, along with many that we make from time to time, and acted accordingly,” managing partner Jeffrey Conn tells the publication.

Almost all of those let go were in the firm’s Pittsburgh office, but other details including their practice areas weren’t disclosed.

However, the Legal Intelligencer, in an article reprinted in New York Lawyer (reg. req.), says the dismissed lawyers were all litigators. It relies on unidentified sources for this information.

It says the firm has a total of 108 lawyers on its roster, so the layoffs will affect 6 percent of Thorp Reed’s attorneys.

Updated on June 24 to include Legal Intelligencer coverage.
