A guilty plea yesterday in Manhattan federal court by a 68-year-old safety inspector who reportedly never looked at more than 200 properties he certified to be free of asbestos and/or lead contamination is only “the tip of the iceberg,” an unidentified “official” tells the New York Times.

Authorities are now investigating to try to determine why Saverio Tadero didn’t perform inspections on the properties and how widespread the issue might be among approximately 1,500 other people who also are certified to perform such inspections, the newspaper says.

“Todaro’s guilty plea is not the end of the story,” said Preet Bharara, the U.S. Attorney for Manhattan, after Tadero’s plea yesterday. “This investigation is very much ongoing.”
