Tom Cruise has filed a $50 million defamation and invasion of privacy action against Life & Style magazine over an article the celebrity magazine published about the actor suggesting he abandoned his daughter Suri, 6.

According to the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California complaint (PDF), the article in question suggested that Cruise abandoned his child after he divorced her mother, Katie Holmes. The Hollywood Reporter’s Hollywood, Esq. blog notes that Cruise’s lawyer, Bert Fields, has also sent “threatening letters” to the National Enquirer and Vanity Fair regarding their coverage of Cruise’s personal life. Fields told the Hollywood Reporter that the complaint was filed Wednesday.

“Tom doesn’t go around suing people,” Fields wrote in a statement. “He’s not a litigious guy. But when these sleaze peddlers try to make money with disgusting lies about his relationship with his child, you bet he’s going to sue.”

Additionally, according to Hollywood, Esq., Fields said Cruise would “undoubtedly” give the libel award to charity.
