A Texas supreme court judge who tweets up to 10 times or more daily has been appointed by the state legislature as its first “Tweeter Laureate.”

Justice Don Willett himself announced the news in an earlier tweet on his @justicewillett account. It provides a photo of the declaration by the state’s house of representatives.

Described by lawmakers as a “lively and engaging presence on Twitter,” he has some 17,000 followers on the social media site.

It appears that Texas may be the first state to create a ceremonial position for an individual who posts on Twitter, NBC DFW reports.

The Associated Press and the Wall Street Journal Law Blog (sub. req.) also have stories.
