Touro Law School could become the second law school in the New York state university system if Stony Brook University becomes a bidder.

Touro’s dean, Lawrence Raful, confirmed talks of selling the school are ongoing, but wouldn’t provide Newsday with many details.

“Are there discussions? Yes. But really, it’s not ‘Man bites dog’—there’s no story yet. It’s so early in the discussions it’s hard to know what shape or form [a possible deal] will take,” Raful says.

A story in the Long Island Business Review estimates that Touro’s property alone is worth more than $35 million and an outright acquisition would be in the $70 million range.

Touro, located on a new Central Islip campus, was founded in 1980 as a division of Touro College and is formally known as the Jacob D. Fuchsberg Law Center.

Currently, only SUNY Buffalo has a law school.
