President Trump has reportedly asked FBI Director James Comey to stay on the job.

Comey has told senior FBI employees that Trump asked him to stay, the New York Times reports in a story that relies on unidentified sources. The Washington Post followed with its own report, which also relies on unidentified sources.

According to the Times, “Comey will have to manage an increasingly difficult relationship with Mr. Trump and his White House” because the FBI is said to be investigating ties between the Russian government and some of Trump’s associates.

Comey has angered Democrats for his refusal to say whether the FBI is investigating the Russian ties, even though he acknowledged in the weeks before the election that the FBI was investigating new Hillary Clinton emails belonging to a Clinton aide. Two days before the election, Comey announced that the agency found nothing in the new emails to change his original conclusion that Clinton should not be prosecuted for use of a private email server.

The Justice Department’s inspector general is reviewing how the department and the FBI handled the Hilary Clinton email probe.

Trump had criticized the FBI during his presidential campaign for failing to charge Clinton with a crime.
