Twitter GC steps down, says he's ready for 'goofing off a bit'
Alexander Macgillivray, Twitter’s general counsel, announced Friday that he would be leaving the company.
The lawyer with the Twitter handle @amac shared the news in a tweet on the social media site, the Wall Street Journal’s All Things D reports. The article notes that Macgillivray’s departure is somewhat unusual in that it comes while Twitter prepares for its initial public offering.
Macgillivray, a former Google in-house lawyer who began his career at Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati, joined Twitter in 2009. According to All Things D, some say Macgillivray is ready to move before the IPO process starts, while others say the lawyer’s relationship with Twitter CEO Dick Costolo has sometimes been tense.
At his blog, bricoleur, Macgillivray writes that Vijaya Gadde, Twitter’s legal director, will be appointed as its general counsel.
“As for me, it has been my privilege to work and fight on behalf of great companies and their users over the last decade. A privilege and a lot of work,” he writes. “So, I’m looking forward to engaging my various Internet passions from new and different perspectives, seeing friends and family without distraction, and just goofing off a bit. We should all do more of that.”
