Two men accused of decapitating an exotic bird at Flamingo Hotel’s wildlife habitat on Friday told police they are law students at the University of California at Berkeley.

Eric Cuellar and Justin Teixeira, both 24, were charged with conspiracy and willful malicious killing of wildlife, report the Las Vegas Sun, the Associated Press and KLAS-TV. The men were reportedly captured on surveillance video chasing the helmeted guineafowl into the trees and then emerging carrying the bird and its severed head.

KLAS spoke with Las Vegas police Sgt. John Sheahan about the allegations. “According to the security people, the men were laughing and joking about the fact of what they had done,” he said.

The men had Berkeley student ID cards and told police they are law students.
