A lawyer based in Allen & Overy’s London office is chair of the ABA’s Section of International Law and Practice. He is the first lawyer outside the United States to lead the group.
"Our sense is that I won't be the last chair overseas—quite the contrary," section chair Jeffrey Golden told the National Law Journal.
The section has grown to 18,500 members, spurred in part by lawyers who practice overseas. Currently, the section has 1,400 foreign lawyers from 90 countries, a 10 percent increase from five years ago.
A 2005 change in the section’s bylaws allows foreign lawyers to become full voting members, the NLJ says.
